Gothic: Of or pertaining to a literary style of
fiction prevalent in the late 18th and early 19th centuries which emphasized
the grotesque, mysterious, and desolate: a gothic novel.
Although gothic is portrayed in the physical sense, like art and
architecture, it can also be heard. There are many new singers and
songwriters today that are creating disturbing song lyrics. These not so
pleasant verses could be considered gothic. Gothic music first submerged in
the late 70's and early 80's. It wasn't until the 90's that we took a closer
look into the lyrics and started blaming them for teenage corruption.
Initially, these songs were produced to shock society. In some peoples views
they have done more than just that. They have given some the sense of
supernatural strengths as a real force in life, and appreciation for passion
over logic and a rejection of conventional rules or rituals. As one can see,
gothic can be portrayed through many different aspects. Beginning in
architecture centuries ago and carrying through right into the present.
Gothic is beautiful as along as it is not pushed to the limit. Many things
have a gothic twist. The future and even the past millennium can be viewed
as gothic. Even though the true definition of gothic is unknown, Grunenburg
was right when he said gothic is ubiquitous.
goths have no set way of dressing, although there are some common looks that
have to do with a romantic or industrial aesthetic. They're generally not
more depressed than other people, but they don't like show their emotions,
so they may not look happy even when they are. They are a mixed bag,
religiously, but there are no real Satanic goths. They tend to be emotional,
non-violent, and artistic.
Art historian and biographer Giorgio Vasari was the first to classify the
movement as Gothic when he wrote, "Then arose new architects who after the
manner of their barbarous nations erected buildings in that style which we
call Gothic."
Gothic architecture - typified with
soaring roofs and exquisite stained glass fought a constant battle with
gravity where architects needed to work out how to keep the massive stone
structures up. The name Gothic, was taken from the barbarians who brought
about the fall of Rome in the sixth century, as Italy at that point of time
was harking back to the classical age for inspiration in art, architecture
and sculptor.
The Goths were divided into two main tribes: the
Ostrogothi or Greutungi (dune-dwellers) and the Visigothi
or Tervingi (steppe-dwellers). Related tribes included the
Burgundians and the Vandals.
